  • The AF-300 can be set to do one of four primary folding patterns including a half fold, a fold out, a letter fold or a zig-zag fold. However, the fold plates on the AF-300 are set manually and thus can be configured for custom folds that are different from the four preset folds.
  • The folder operates at a speed of up to 4000 sheets per hour or can be set to fold documents manually. It can even fold sets of up to 3 sheets of paper through the manual feed slot.
  • The AF-300 has a feed hopper capable of holding up to fifty sheets of 20lb paper at a time. However it is best to keep it to about half that many in order to prevent feed problems and paper jams.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

  • The fold plates on the AF-300 need to be adjusted manually. You have to loosen the set screws and move the paper stops to the correct positions. This can be pretty tricky and it can take a while to set the folder up so that it folds correctly. One trick to remember when setting up the fold plates is to use the manual feed knob on the side of machine to feed the paper through the machine. Pay attention to the paper as it hits the paper stops. If the paper stops are crooked the machine won't fold straight. The AF-300 can take as long as 10-15 minutes to set up. This makes it ideal for users who just need to do just one style of fold.
  • The AF-300 is not designed for folding heavy or glossy paper stocks. It is a great option for folding standard copy papers but will have difficulties feeding heavier stocks through the fold rollers of the machine.
  • The AF-300 is really best suited for low volume folding. For users who need to fold a few hundred documents a week this machine is probably a reasonable solution. However, it is important to understand that using this machine you WILL have paper jams and if you try to fold a lot of paper it will be a headache. This is true of all paper folders in this price range. It is something that many users simply don't understand before purchasing this type of unit.

Recommendation:

  • The AF-300 is a fairly flexible low cost paper folding machine that provides the user with the ability to fold several sizes of paper into a number of different patterns.
  • However, the AF-300 is really best suited for users who are looking to primarily fold documents with one folding pattern and for users who need to fold a few hundred sheets per week.

Risk Inclination - How Do You Compare To Others?

Risk inclination research provides interesting information about dealing with risks in life and in business.

Ever wonder how risk inclined you are?  And how you compare to others.

As a part of my forthcoming book, Seize Opportunity - A Practical Guide to Taking Advantage of Opportunities, I conducted some research on risk inclination.  The research involved people self-assessing their risk inclination in a variety of areas.

Participants were first asked to indic
te their general risk inclination on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being Very Risk Averse and 10 being Very Risk Inclined.  They were then asked to be more specific by similarly indicating their risk inclination in the following areas.

  • Physical Risks - Activities that involve some risk of injury. Riding a motorcycle, river rafting, rock climbing or skydiving are some examples.
  • Career Risks - Risk such as job changes, taking on new responsibilities or seeking promotions.
  • Financial Risks - Your risk tolerance in investing, borrowing and lending money.
  • Social Risks - Risks like introducing yourself to someone you don't know or putting yourself in an unfamiliar social situation even at the risk of possible embarrassment.
  • Intellectual Risks - Things like your willingness to study a difficult topic, pursue information that challenges your convictions or read an intellectually challenging book.
  • Creative Risks - Risks such as painting, drawing, taking on a writing challenge or pursuing an unconventional design.
  • Relationship Risks - Risks such as a willingness to pursue a new relationship, spend time with someone despite an uncertain outcome or make a relationship commitment.
  • Emotional Risks - Willingness to be emotionally vulnerable.
  • Spiritual Risks - Willingness to place your trust in concepts that may be unprovable or you do not fully understand.

Having assessed their willingness to take these nine different types of risk, participants were then again asked the first question about their general risk inclination again.  Here are the results of the research so far.

Averages and Ranges of Assessments - On average, people placed their Balance Point for all types of risks between 5.9 and 7.7. I find it interesting that the averages are all above the midpoint on the assessment scale.  It is also of interest that the range is so relatively small with less than two points between the lower and higher averages.  This seems to suggest that people, as a whole, consider themselves moderately risk inclined and they see their risk inclination in all areas as reasonably similar.

Individually, the range of risk inclination for the specific risks varied the maximum possible.  Some people had self-assessed risk inclinations ranging all the way from 1 to 10.

The range of averages of all risks for men was 6.2 to 7.8.  The average risk inclinations for all risks for women were lower but broader ranging from 5.0 to 7.6.

Highest Assessment - Both as a whole and when broken down by gender, respondents indicated they were most comfortable taking intellectual risks.  This could be due to people seeing the downside of taking intellectual risks as more acceptable than negative outcomes from other risks such as financial, relationship or physical.  Put another way, intellectual risks are private in nature and usually taken without anyone being aware of the risk except the person taking the risk.  As such, a negative outcome, should it occur, is likely known only to the risk-taker.

Lowest Assessment - Overall, people identified financial risks as the ones where least comfortable taking.  The average age of the respondents being in the mid-forties likely influences this result.  Men assessed their risk inclination in both financial and emotional risks as their lowest.  My guess is that many will not be surprised to learn that emotional risks are among the least comfortable for men.  This strikes me as consistent with the way men are often socialized in our society.  Women identified physical risks as the ones they were least inclined to take.

Gender Differences - Men and women's inclination to take social and creative risks was essentially identical.  The greatest difference in risk inclination between men and women came in physical risks.  The average inclination to take physical risks for males was 6.9.  For females, it is 5.0.  This range of 1.9 is the greatest difference in risk inclination that occurs when comparing results by gender.

There are two type of risks for which women indicated a greater risk inclination than men.  Can you guess which ones?  Women expressed a higher inclination to take both relationship and emotional risks than men.

Revised Overall Risk Inclination - One of the points of this exercise is to encourage people to look at their risk inclination more broadly.  That's the reason respondents are asked to assess their Overall Risk Inclination a second time after assessing their inclination to take risks in a variety of specific areas.  I am pleased to report that many respondents revised their Overall Risk Inclination upward as a result of completing the survey.

Two out of five people moved their Balance Point to the right, towards more risk inclined, the second time they were asked to assess their Overall Risk Inclination compared to their response to the same question when they first responded to it.  That's powerful and means that simply looking at their risk profile more broadly allowed them to revise their Overall Risk Inclination upward.  For women, this effect was even more dramatic.  Fully half of the women taking the survey increased their Overall Risk Inclination.  One in three men did the same.

Two in five taking the survey did not change their Overall Risk Inclination.  For men, those with unchanged Overall Risk Inclinations were 44 percent.  For women, it was 36 percent.

Some people revised their Overall Risk Inclination downward as a result of taking the survey, but only one in five.  It's refreshing to see that only half as many people moved their assessment downward compared to the number who moved theirs upward.  For women, only 15 percent moved their assessments downward, while 24 percent of men did the same.

So, to review, two out of five moved their assessments of their Overall Risk Inclination upward.  The same proportion kept theirs the same and one in five moved theirs downward.

More Influential Risk Inclinations - I have long suspected that we allow our comfort level with certain kinds of risks to disproportionately influence our perception of our Overall Risk Inclination.  One of the goals of this survey is to look for correlation between the first assessment of Overall Risk Inclination and risk inclination in the various specific areas that would provide evidence of such disproportionate influence.

Based on countless conversations, I have sensed that many people allow their comfort level with physical risks to significantly influence their perception of their Overall Risk Inclination.  But I have been wary to assert this due to the fact that most of the people who have indicated this to me are aware of my inclination to take physical risks by skydiving.

Their comments often start with a statement such as, "I could never do what you do.  I'm not a risk-taker."  This seems like a pretty clear reference to physical risks such as skydiving. Given time, I will explore with the person making the statement areas of their life where they are more risk inclined.  Once we can disconnect their perception of their Overall Risk Inclination from their comfort with physical risks, they will often revisit their initial statement.  I love when that happens!  They conclude the conversation feeling a bit differently about themselves.

So, how much correlation did we find between respondents first assessment of their Overall Risk Inclination and their physical risk inclination?  It depends on what group of respondents you are looking at.  For males, the assessments are almost identical.  My suspicion was confirmed.

For females, there is a lot less correlation, so the same theory does not seem to apply to women.  For women, the highest degree of correlation with the initial assessment of Overall Risk Inclination is with financial risks.  For both genders combined, the highest correlation is with emotional risks.  I leave it to you to discern the significance of these correlations.  Nothing in particular has yet occurred to me.  If something profound comes to mind, send me an email and let me know.

Impact of Age - One of the questions I get most often on the topic of risk inclination is how it changes with age.  Research has shown that most people become more change adverse as they age.  But comfort with change is only part of the risk equation. So, what can we glean from the responses to the surveys about how risk inclination changes with age?  There are some insights, but I would not consider the conclusive without a lot more data. There are, however, some interesting patterns.

My guess is that if you were asked, based solely on intuition, whether people become more or less risk inclined as they age, you would say less.  I agree and think most people would say the same.  But we are not necessarily correct.

The responses to the survey show that, for the population surveyed, there is not a statistically significant change in risk inclination based on age.  But things change when we look at the responses by gender.  Men show a reduced inclination to risk as they age, but women do not!  The women in the population surveyed showed an increase inclination to risk as they age. This is a fascinating observation that bears more research.

At this point, we can only speculate as to the causes of this increased risk inclination.  It could be attributable to the fact that the women I asked to respond to the survey are, by my observation, reasonably financially secure.  I would be inclined to suggest that some types of risk inclination increase with financial security.

Another factor that could be contributing to this increased risk inclination with age in women is a possible latent desire to enjoy activities and take advantage of opportunities that were difficult for them to pursue earlier in their lives due to the obligations of raising a family.  Some sociologists have suggested that may women spend the first half of their lives tending to the needs of others and the second half of their lives addressing more of their own needs.  That concept could be related to the survey results.

Both of these possible explanations are just supposition until validated by further research.  But women's increased risk inclination as they age as indicated by the survey population is still quite thought provoking.

Yours Alone

While it is interesting to know how your risk inclination compares to others, please do not let it influence you too much. How you compare to others is really not that important.

While we can learn from observing what others do well and poorly in this realm, comparing yourself to them is just not helpful.  Your natural level of risk inclination - the position of your Balance Point at this moment ( is a result of a multitude of factors that are unique to you.  It is influenced by the person you were at birth and all your life experiences since.  Like you, it's unique.

It is an interesting reference point - and possibly a starting point if you choose to set about intentionally changing it.

Beware of home working jobs directories that say they have the contact details of the best money making opportunities on the Internet. They haven't. What they've actually got is an expensive load of links, and most of them are dead, to sites that promise you riches in return for stuffing envelopes etc. I think you get the picture.

 

Other notable scams include companies offering you money for 'home product testing', theres a registration fee and the products you'll test (if they ever send you one) will be worth about 5% of that fee. Then there are other beauties like proof reading texts, data entry or even so called 'Internet research' where companies claim they'll pay you for surfing the Internet. If it sound too good to be true then it probably is. In general avoid 'registration fees'. Online businesses do not have the same administrative overheads as traditional offices so why do they need a 'registration fee'?

 

Avoid The Home Working Jobs Scams:

 

As a general principle remember “caveat emptore” (buyer beware). There are plenty of decent people offering genuine value and high quality service but there are also a lot of sharks. You should keep your guard and carefully consider what people are telling you. Don't be too eager to believe the hype.

 

Firstly there is no quick and easy way to get rich, well none that's legal anyway. The only way is through your own time and effort. Anyone who tells you that you can be rich without working for it is lying – pure and simple. Secondly any legitimate company will be more than happy to offer you references, provide full contact details (which you should verify) and will answer any queries you may have. They'll also have a clear and unambiguous refund policy; will offer you concise 'terms of services' (often called 'Terms and Conditions') which you should read carefully.

 

If the home working jobs involve selling products than do some research into the potential markets. You can do this through search engines, forums and social networking sites. If you and those you know wouldn't buy it chances are no one else will either. Similarly if the work involves some sort of production line assembly be clear exactly what the company will pay you for each item you produce. If they say it depends upon many other factors don't buy into it.

 

Genuine Home Working Jobs:

 

So what are the genuine opportunities and how can you find them. The most important point here is to do your research. Search widely through the search engines and directories. participate in forums and related social networks and groups. Ask other people what they've found effective. Read independent review sites and check out the blogs.

 

Also consider that the Internet is a reflection of the wider real world. If somethings makes money in the real world then their likely to have potential as possible home working jobs. Probably the best opportunities at the moment combine conventional high paid activities with the market accessibility of the Internet.

The competition is pretty intense for their dollars – or pounds or euros – or whatever! And of course people being people - they will try anything to gain your/my attention for the goods, information and services they are trying to sell.

And so as we surf and search for our ideal home business opportunities we come across some of the most amazing HYPE (highly exaggerated advertising/claims) ever invented!

So a little bit of advice – don't take too much notice of any ads you may see that claim -
"You will Explode your Income" (unless, of course, it's from a pyrotechnics company!)

Then there is the
"Earn $100.000.00 in 4 months – risk free" (yeah right!)
or
"Create an Unstoppable Avalanche of Eager Buyers"….(eh? - Think about that one?)

"Use my Marketing System exactly as I describe and with some time and effort on your part you can earn some money" may not sound as sexy as -

"My Marketing System will Launch your Earnings into Orbit" (what does this mean? - unless it's from NASA inviting you to put your savings aboard the next space shuttle!)

but it is a much more realistic expectation. The second headline is just meaningless hype. And I HATE Hype don't you?

Another trick that really gets my goat – is the buy now or loose offer – if you don't buy today you will have pay double because I will put the price up – (yeah sure!) months later – or even years in some cases – you hit the same website and guess what…yep - the offer is still EXCATLY the same!
Of course it is!!!

The final thing I need to mention here before I get to the main reason for this article is how do Internet Marketers come up with the values for their products? My e-book is worth $97.00 but you can have it free!….eh? Do you know anybody in this World who would go into a regular bookstore and pay $97.00 for a book? I'll tell you I don't that's for sure! And if the book is REALLY worth $97.00 do you think you would get it for nothing…?

Ok, the idea for this article is not to be negative – there ARE thousands and thousands of good online home businesses available on the Internet – but I promise you this, you will not make any money in any of them without any effort.

If you are looking to start an Online Home Business and you want the best piece of advice that I can give you… Whatever you choose to do (even if it takes you lots of trail and error to decide) just STAY FOCUSED. Persistence, honestly, is the ONLY attribute you need to be successful online.

Virtual Professionals - 2003 Snap Shot

Virtual professionals are a relatively new phenomena in the workforce, and all indications are that it could potentially become the norm in the 21st century. The information age presented technology that allows people to work for anyone, anywhere, assuming the right infrastructure is in place. Although some of us were working virtually prior to the turn of the century, a full eighty percent did not begin working that way until 1999. This wave corresponds with the availability of computer technology and affordable, high speed Internet access.
Nearly everyone interviewed was the owner or co-owner of their own business, and nearly seventy percent of these virtual professionals became entrepreneurs simultaneously with becoming virtual professionals.

So, who are these virtual professionals? The majority of people working virtually were in the 36 to 45 year old range, with the twenties close behind making nearly eighty percent between 25 and 45 years old. Although the survey was conducted across a broad range of business related forums, a number of respondents said they were virtual assistants (VAs), a relatively new industry in its own right. Building on the concept of secretaries and administrative assistants in the traditional workforce, VAs perform business services and administrative tasks for other professionals. Virtual professionals were also consultants, web designers, programmers, graphic artists and writers. The trades which typically are creative, intellectual and autonomous lend themselves to virtual professions. It will be interesting to see in the future whether the number of other professions entering the virtual world grows to meet the vast number of virtual assistants prepared to help them!

Women working at home with small children in the background have their own unique challenges, but imagine the education their children will get about entrepreneurship. Renae Bolton, owner of Triple J WordProcessing Co., left the office to fix her son a snack and he called out "Mom - one of your clients is blinking you!" when an Instant Message came in.

A virtual professional can be anywhere on the planet, again assuming the technology is available, and for that reason, the survey purposefully did not collect geographic information from the respondents. However, the survey respondents came from global networking environments online in order to get a diverse response. Although the United States was a leader, a significant number of virtual professionals were from Australia and Canada.

Working virtually can be a challenge, and without the right technology, it can be downright impossible. In the next two articles of this series, we will look at the perks and perils of working this way, and later, what tools and technologies are popular amongst virtual professionals in 2003.
